HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT BATHROOM REMODEL OR RENOVATION

Thanks to COVID-19, 2020 became known for many things—and the home improvement phenomenon is certainly one of them.

Luckily, if you didn't get the chance last year, 2021 may be the perfect time to get started on your own bathroom remodel or renovations. Here's your simple guide to getting started.

CREATE A BUDGET

First things first, never start a major home project without first setting a budget. It helps if you know the difference between a bathroom remodel and a renovation. A renovation is often simpler—renovations are simply "restoring" something to a good state of repair and can often include modernizing and redecorating.

On the other hand, doing a bathroom remodel means creating something entirely new. Remodeling can mean taking out walls, completely replacing showers, toilets and fixtures, restructuring a space or adding more square footage or amenities where they didn’t originally exist.

Too often, homeowners set out to do a "minor update" or renovation, only to find themselves thousands of dollars in the hole. This often happens due to lack of  a budget.

While the average bathroom remodel costs around $10,000, renovations can cost significantly less, but be sure to clarify with your contractor which you have in mind. Once you've set the budget, stick to it.

Unfortunately, with almost any bathroom remodel, unforeseen problems do arise. Materials on backorder, previously undiscovered plumbing problems and more can throw off your budget. Because of this, it's wise to set aside 20% of your total budget to cover unplanned changes.

TO DIY OR HIRE A PRO?

Whether remodeling or renovating, If your bathroom will be a do-it-youself project, make sure you're not just focusing on aesthetic changes. You will likely need an understanding of basic plumbing, electrical for lighting, and ventilation to avoid later problems.

Sometimes homeowners take on a DIY project to save money, but end up spending more because they didn't do their research and need to hire a pro to fix their mistakes. Other times, homeowners just don’t have the time to dedicate to their project. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you start. If it’s more than you think you can handle, review professionals in your area who have experience in bathroom renovations or remodeling.
